A solitaire diamond ring costing little over a million rupees completed the engagement of ace tennis star Sania Mirza(22) with Mohammed Shorab Mirza (23), son of city based businessman on Friday.
It was an intensely private affair with the Mirza family restricting the invitation to only relatives from both sides and few family friends. Family sources said that about 350 invitations were sent, which included about two dozen invitations to Sania`s close friends in the sports and film world.
The engagement function was held at Taj Krishna, the five star hotel belonging to GV Krishna Reddy of the GVK group. It was GVK(as he is popularly known) who spotted Sania early in her career and sponsored and funded her to reach the level she has reached today.
Sania attired in a jean and T emerged from the family home at Jubilee Hills a little after 4 pm and left in a brand new BMW car bearing number 786.
Sources said that she went to a Dargah near Filmnagar to offer her prayers before reaching the hotel. She entered the hotel through the service gate to avoid the scores of TV cameras and large contingent of media persons camping in front of the hotel since afternoon. In the hotel waiting for her were the beauticians and make up crowd, who went to work on her.
One of the attendees said that she appeared resplendent in a green coloured Ghagra-choli with golden borders designed by the designer duo Nikhil-Shantanu. Shorab Mirza, who reached the hotel earlier was attired in a specially designed Armani suit.
It was Sania mania in the city since morning. Even before the family was awake TV crews arrived at the house and started recording everyone going and coming into the mirza house.Even routine visitors were not spared by overenthusiastic media persons. Finally an exasperated Imran Mirza(Sania`s father) had to intervene and request the media to spare them.“ You have to understand this is a private affair and I want you co-operate with us,” he told the assembled media.
Sania fans went hyperactive too. Though none reached her house knowing fully well of the heavy security around her house, they distributed cakes bearing the couples name, released balloons wishing her happiness. A huge crowd gathered too in front of the hotel hoping to have a glimpse of her. TV channels telecast goodwill messages from fans.
The engagement ceremony took place at 8.45 pm It was followed a by dinner, which was personally supervised by Chief Chef of Taj, Raj Khosla, sources said.
